Overview
From Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, to the aftermath of Indian Ocean tsunami and the massive earthquake in Pakistan, 2005 was a year of natural disasters. While 2005 had some significant losses, notably that of Pope John Paul II, civil rights fighter Rosa Parks, comedian Johnny Carson, and Prince Rainer III of Monaco, it was a year of triumphs as well. Angela Merkel became the first woman chancellor of Germany, Camilla became duchess of Cornwall, and Turkish literary lion Orhan Parmuk received the German Book Trade Peace Prize.
